School districts must provide additional instructional services, support, or special accommodations to students who experience trauma from the death of a sibling, parent, guardian, or household member by suicide or homicide, or from domestic violence or abuse, when the trauma interferes with learning and the student does not qualify for an IEP or Section 504 services

Evaluations must be conducted at a parent/guardian's request or when school personnel identify declining academic performance following a traumatic event, with assessments performed by school counselors, psychologists, social workers, administrators, or educators familiar with the student

Support plans may include testing accommodations, supplementary aids, school counseling services, homework assistance, or modifications to the learning environment, and can be modified based on the student's needs

Plans remain in effect until the student leaves the district or demonstrates significant and sustained academic improvement showing services are no longer needed

Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, school board notices about Section 504 services must inform parents that students ages 3-21 who experienced these types of trauma may qualify for Section 504 accommodations
