Expands the definition of "peace officer" to explicitly include criminal investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for purposes of weapons laws and false personation statutes

Broadens firearm tracing requirements to cover firearms that were unlawfully possessed, used for unlawful purposes, recovered from crime scenes, associated with crimes, or acquired as abandoned/lost/discarded weapons

Mandates law enforcement agencies use the ATF's eTrace platform (or successor) for firearm tracing and requires participation in the eTrace collective data sharing program to share trace reports with all Illinois law enforcement agencies on a reciprocal basis

Removes discretionary language ("when necessary," "when appropriate") to make firearm tracing and use of federal databases mandatory rather than optional

Updates references to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives throughout the statute to reflect the agency's current name
