IL HB2442

Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to expand the list of vehicles authorized to use traffic control signal preemption devices (devices that change traffic lights to green or extend green light duration)

Adds local and county emergency management services agency vehicles to the list of permitted users, allowing them to use preemption devices when responding to bona fide emergencies with red oscillating, rotating, or flashing lights

Existing law already permits preemption devices on police vehicles, law enforcement vehicles, fire department vehicles, ambulances, organ transport vehicles, Illinois Emergency Management Agency vehicles, commuter buses, and snow removal vehicles

Unauthorized installation, transport, or operation of preemption devices remains a Class A misdemeanor with a $1,000 fine; unauthorized sales carry a $5,000 fine per device sold
