First division vehicle school bus driver applicants can alternatively complete a training course from their employer covering safe driving practices, transporting students with disabilities, emergency preparedness, and pick-up/drop-off procedures, subject to state approval

First division vehicle drivers are exempt from the medical examination requirement if their transportation provider uses a telematics system that monitors driver behavior including speeding, hard braking, device use, and collision detection

Safety inspection intervals for first division vehicles used as school buses are extended from every 6 months or 10,000 miles to every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever occurs first
