IL HB2976

Amends the School Code to define "civic event" as an event sponsored by a nonprofit organization or governmental entity that is open to the public, including inaugurations, artistic or cultural performances, or educational gatherings

Allows public middle school and high school students one excused absence per school year to attend a civic event, subject to State Board of Education guidelines

Authorizes school boards to require reasonable advance notice of the intended absence and documentation of participation in the civic event

Grants the State Board of Education authority to adopt rules to further define what qualifies as a "civic event"
