Election authorities in Illinois may, at their discretion, appoint election judges who are unaffiliated with any political party

When an unaffiliated judge is appointed to a 5-judge precinct, the composition changes from 3 judges of one party and 2 of another to 2 judges from each major party plus 1 unaffiliated judge

When an unaffiliated judge is appointed to a 3-judge precinct, the composition becomes 1 judge from each major party plus 1 unaffiliated judge

Unaffiliated judges must apply through a process prescribed by the election authority and are subject to the same qualifications as party-affiliated judges, including residency requirements

Student election judges (high school juniors/seniors and college students) may certify that they choose not to affiliate with a political party when serving as judges
