Starting January 1, 2030, all new washing machines sold in Illinois for residential, commercial, or state use must contain a microfiber filtration system with a mesh size of 100 micrometers or less

Filtration systems must be either built into the washing machine design or included as an in-line filter that is packaged, sold, and installed with the machine, and must be active across all washing cycles

Each washing machine must display a conspicuous consumer label stating it contains a microfiber filter and instructing users to check the filter regularly and dispose of captured lint in a waste bin

Civil penalties for violations are up to $10,000 for a first offense and up to $30,000 for each subsequent violation

The bill amends the Environmental Protection Act by adding new Section 52.6 and modifying existing civil penalty provisions in Section 42
