Chicago Public Schools must designate a "traceable communication system" as the exclusive method for district employees and volunteers to communicate electronically with students, with all messages logged and accessible to parents

Principals must notify parents within the first 10 days of each school year about the designated communication programs and provide instructions for accessing and reviewing communications

District employees and volunteers are prohibited from communicating with students through personal email, text messaging, social media, or other unauthorized platforms outside the traceable system

Violations can result in disciplinary actions including personnel file notations, warnings, termination, or for licensed employees, license revocation, suspension, or probationary conditions imposed by the State Board of Education

Parents may submit written consent to authorize a specific employee or volunteer to communicate with their child outside the traceable system, but such consent cannot authorize inappropriate or sexual communications and may be revoked at any time
