Portable solar generation devices with a maximum output of 1,200 watts or less that plug into standard 120-volt outlets would be exempt from net metering program and interconnection requirements under Illinois law.

Devices must meet National Electrical Code standards, be certified by Underwriters Laboratories or equivalent testing laboratory, and include features that prevent energizing a building's electrical system during power outages.

Electricity providers cannot require customers to obtain approval, pay fees, or install additional equipment beyond what is integrated into the portable solar device.

Electricity providers are shielded from liability for any damage or injury caused by a customer's portable solar generation device.
