As Governor, Edgar prioritized fiscal responsibility during a national recession, increased funding for underserved school districts, modernized the state's adoption system, and led one of the most diverse administrations in Illinois history

Founded the Edgar Fellows Program at the University of Illinois after leaving office, mentoring over 500 future public leaders

Survived by his wife of 58 years, Brenda, two children, and five grandchildren; a copy of the resolution is to be presented to his family
