First African American student to receive a varsity letter at Edwardsville High School in 1951, ultimately earning 10 varsity letters across football, basketball, track, baseball, and A Cappella choir before graduating in 1953

Served in the United States Army as military police after attending Illinois State University on a football scholarship

Worked as a recreational therapist, school counselor, and administrator at University City Senior High School for 32 years; earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Education from Webster University

Co-founded the Historic Lincoln School Alumni Foundation in 1986, which provided scholarships and community assistance; also served as a founding board member of the Edwardsville Symphony
