Veterans Assistance Commission commissioners will be elected at consolidated elections beginning with the first consolidated election following January 1, 2026, replacing the current appointment process

Seven commissioners will be elected at-large from each district, with candidates required to be both district residents and veterans; elections will be nonpartisan with no party designation on ballots

Initial elected commissioners will divide by lot into two groups: one group serving 4-year terms and one serving initial 2-year terms (with 4-year terms thereafter) to establish staggered elections

Vacancies will be filled within 60 days by appointment of the board president with consent of other commissioners; if more than 28 months remain in the term, a special election will be held at the next consolidated election

Elected commissioners will retain the same powers, duties, and compensation as commissioners appointed under the pre-2026 system
