Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, all Illinois public elementary and high schools must include a curriculum unit on Latina and Latino history, including contributions to civil rights from the 19th century onward

Required instruction must cover individual Latino contributions in government, arts, humanities, and sciences, as well as community contributions to U.S. economic, cultural, social, and political development, with emphasis on Illinois and Midwest history

The State Superintendent of Education may prepare and distribute instructional materials, including Public Broadcasting Service resources, as guidelines for schools

Each local school board determines the minimum instructional time required to satisfy the unit of instruction requirement

Regional superintendents must monitor school district compliance during annual visits, and schools may fulfill requirements through online programs or courses
