IL SB2828

Amends the Counties Code and Illinois Municipal Code to expand acceptable credentials for building inspectors beginning January 1, 2027, allowing International Code Council certifications, US Department of Labor-approved apprenticeship programs, or licensure as an architect, professional engineer, or structural engineer.

Specifies required International Code Council certifications by inspection type: residential building inspector for residential buildings, commercial building inspector for commercial buildings, property maintenance and housing inspector for property maintenance, or certified building official for multiple disciplines.

Extends the grace period for new building inspectors to obtain required certifications from one year to 18 months from date of hire or January 1, 2027, whichever is later.

Exempts plumbing inspectors from the building inspector certification requirements, requiring them instead to be licensed under the Illinois Plumbing Licensing Law.

Requires counties and municipalities to maintain copies of inspector certifications on file.
