Declares February 3, 2026 as Topical Steroid Withdrawal Syndrome (TSWS) Awareness Day in Illinois

TSWS is a severe condition that can result from use of topical steroids commonly prescribed or sold over the counter for eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo, and alopecia areata

Symptoms include skin flushing, inflammation, spreading rashes, profuse skin flaking, burning, and itching that can last months to years, leaving some sufferers bedridden and unable to work or attend school

Mental health impacts are significant: 81% of adults and 56% of children with TSWS report anxiety and/or depression, while 47% of adults and 11% of children report suicidal ideation

Limited research on TSWS has impeded development of diagnostic criteria, treatment protocols, and education for healthcare providers and patients
