Illinois Senate resolution mourning the death of Brigadier General Richard E. Northern, Illinois National Guard (Ret.), who passed away on September 2, 2025 at age 98

BG Northern served 39 years in the Illinois National Guard (1948-1987), including Korean War service with the 314th Ammunition Group, and later served as Director of the Illinois State Selective Service System beginning November 15, 1977

Served as administrator of the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy for 24 years, overseeing construction of multiple facilities including the All Faiths Chapel, Kent Infirmary, and several war memorials

Active in Republican politics for decades, serving 67 years as precinct committeeman, 37 years as Adams County Republican Party chairman, and as chairman of the Illinois State Republican Party

Received numerous military honors including the Meritorious Service Medal, Illinois Distinguished Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, and was named Illinois Veteran of the Year in 2015
