Earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Northern Illinois University in 1974 and an associate's degree in nursing from Illinois Central College in 1997

Worked for the American Red Cross for many years as director of safety services in Kankakee and executive director in Flint, Michigan and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with over 50 years of volunteer service

Served as a registered nurse at Carle Health Methodist Hospital, Youth Farm Inc., and the Children's Home Association of Illinois, and taught at Illinois Central College's School of Nursing

Active volunteer with St. Paul's Episcopal Church, YWCA, and Girl Scouts of America; survived by sisters Kathy Hand and Connie Frank, three nieces, and four grandnephews/grandnieces
