Held extensive educational roles including teacher, coach, and principal in Springfield schools, and served as Sangamon County Regional Superintendent of Schools from 1974 to 1980

Chaired the Sangamon County Republican Party from 1983 to 2005 and served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention six times between 1984 and 2004

Made significant contributions to youth swimming programs, coaching multiple teams, organizing the first YWCA Women's Swim Team in 1959, and earning induction into the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame in 1999
