Worked as a Chicago Tribune reporter beginning in 1969, later becoming Statehouse Bureau Chief covering Illinois state government for nearly 14 years

Served as associate press secretary and speechwriter for Governor Jim Edgar's administration starting in 1992, then worked at the Capital Development Board where he helped plan the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

Survived by daughters Liz Egler and Melissa Egler, daughter-in-law Sandy Nickel, and grandsons Ben (age 15) and Josh (age 13)
