Led the Serve Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service for more than a decade, a 40-member bipartisan board administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services

Served as an elected member of the Springfield School District 186 Board of Education and founded the Facebook mutual aid group "Springfield Families Helping Families" during COVID-19, which grew to 32,200 members

Achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and participated in Model Illinois Government

Survived by his wife Amber, children Anastasia, Addison, and Clark, and brothers Craig and Ryan McFarland
