HB 1114 Summary

• Requires local government units to offer and pay for health insurance coverage for police officers, county police officers, and sheriffs who become disabled in the line of duty, effective July 1, 2010.

• Covers the disabled officer, their spouse or surviving spouse, and children until age 18 (or 23 if enrolled in secondary school or college, or indefinitely if permanently disabled).

• Health insurance coverage must equal that offered to active public safety employees in the same local unit.

• Employee eligibility ends when they are no longer disabled, become Medicare-eligible, or the local unit terminates its health insurance program for active officers.

• Surviving spouse eligibility also ends upon remarriage; children's eligibility ends when they no longer meet age or enrollment requirements.
