HB 1133 Summary

• Changes Gary school corporation governing body elections from district-based to at-large elections beginning with the 2010 primary election, with all seven members elected by all voters in the school corporation.

• Requires school board candidates to run on a nonpartisan basis and prohibits candidates from seeking endorsements or assistance from political parties, accepting contributions from political parties or public officials, or stating political party endorsements.

• Allows removal from office of any elected candidate who violates the nonpartisan standards under IC 34-17.

• Prohibits political parties from directly or indirectly campaigning for or against school board candidates, with violating parties subject to civil penalties up to $1,000 under IC 3-9-4-17.

• Repeals IC 20-23-12-4 governing the drawing of district lines for the Gary school corporation.
