SB 183 Summary

• Changes the state superintendent of public instruction from an elected position to one appointed by the governor, effective July 1, 2010.

• Removes the superintendent from the definition of "public officer" and "state office" in Indiana Code sections relating to elections and ethics.

• Eliminates the superintendent from appearing on the general election ballot and from being nominated at political party state conventions.

• Allows the incumbent superintendent (elected in November 2008) to continue serving through January 14, 2013, with salary and disclosure requirements under previous law.

• Governor fixes the superintendent's salary, and the superintendent serves at the governor's pleasure and must take an oath of office and post a bond.
