Senate Bill 196 Summary

• Amends IC 9-24-7 to establish a new minimum age requirement for motor vehicle learner's permits beginning January 1, 2011.

• Increases the minimum age to obtain a learner's permit from 15 years old to 16 years and 30 days of age, effective January 1, 2011.

• Requires individuals under 18 years old to not be ineligible under IC 9-24-2-1 and to be enrolled in an approved driver education course to obtain a learner's permit.

• Creates a transitional period where individuals aged 15 years and 180 days may obtain permits from July 1, 2010 through December 31, 2010.

• The bill becomes effective July 1, 2010, with the new age requirement taking effect January 1, 2011.
