SB 225 Summary

• Transfers township duties for cemetery maintenance, weed control, and parks/recreation to Marion County on January 1, 2011; township assistance to health and hospital corporation countywide effective January 1, 2013.

• Abolishes township trustee offices and township boards in Marion County effective January 1, 2013; terms of trustees and board members elected in November 2010 expire January 1, 2013.

• Consolidates all township fire departments and fire protection territory departments into the consolidated city's fire department on January 1, 2013; fire department indebtedness incurred before consolidation remains with originating entity.

• Transfers township small claims court responsibilities to the county effective January 1, 2012; establishes uniform property tax levy for consolidated fire department with ability to phase out township fire service borrowing through 2018.

• Requires department of local government finance to identify excess township fund balances and transfer 90% to county for township infrastructure funds; increases county maximum property tax levy for 2013 to account for transferred township functions.
