Senate Bill 406 Summary

• School corporations and nonpublic schools must include age-appropriate instruction on healthy relationships in kindergarten through grade 12 curricula by July 1, 2012.

• Each school must develop and adopt a specific dating violence response policy that includes reporting procedures, discipline guidelines, prevention coordinator designation, and statements that dating violence is not tolerated.

• The Department of Education shall develop guidelines and the State Board shall adopt rules by July 1, 2011 for healthy relationship instruction and model dating violence response policies.

• Schools must provide annual training to administrators, teachers, nurses, safety officers, coaches, and mental health staff on healthy relationships, warning signs of dating violence, and appropriate response procedures.

• Schools must publish their dating violence policies in student handbooks and inform parents of the policy; this chapter does not prevent victims from seeking civil or criminal remedies under other laws.
