HB 1019 Summary

• Division of Mental Health and Addiction shall develop basic and inservice training courses for teachers on child suicide prevention and recognition of warning signs, in consultation with the Department of Education and evidence-based programs.

• School governing bodies may adjourn schools for up to three days per year to allow teachers, administrators, and paraprofessionals to participate in suicide prevention training courses.

• After June 30, 2013, individuals may not receive an initial teaching license unless they complete education and training on suicide prevention and recognizing signs that a student may be considering suicide.

• Division of Mental Health and Addiction must report annually to the Indiana Commission on Mental Health on developed programs, with reporting requirement expiring December 31, 2013.

• Effective date is July 1, 2011.
