HB 1152 Summary

• Department of Education must develop and disseminate guidelines, information sheets, and forms about concussions and head injuries to coaches, student athletes, and parents by July 1, 2012, in consultation with the interscholastic athletics association.

• Student athletes and parents must receive information about head injuries and concussions and sign acknowledgment forms each year before beginning practice, with coaches maintaining files of completed forms.

• Student athletes suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury must be removed from play immediately and cannot return until evaluated and cleared by a licensed health care provider trained in head injury evaluation.

• Licensed health care providers who voluntarily evaluate student athletes for concussions are immune from civil liability except for gross negligence or willful or wanton misconduct.

• Effective date: July 1, 2011.
