HB 1213 Summary

• Changes the East Chicago school board from appointed to elected members, effective July 1, 2011.
• Establishes a five-member school board elected at-large on a nonpartisan basis, with initial elections at the 2012 primary election.
• Stagger initial terms so the three candidates receiving the most votes serve four-year terms and the two receiving the next highest votes serve two-year terms.
• Requires candidates to file nomination petitions with 250 registered voter signatures at least 74 days before the election.
• Applies only to school corporations in cities with populations between 32,000 and 32,800 (East Chicago).
