HB 1258 Summary

• Establishes that only physicians licensed in Indiana who meet all federal requirements may prescribe RU-486 (mifepristone) for inducing abortion.

• Requires physicians to report in writing to the Indiana medical licensing board if they become aware that a patient experienced hospitalization, transfusion, incomplete abortion, severe bleeding, adverse reaction, or other serious event after RU-486 use.

• Mandates the medical licensing board compile reported adverse events, remove personal identifying information, and maintain reports as public records.

• Makes knowingly providing RU-486 in violation of these requirements a Class D felony (Class C felony for subsequent violations), with additional professional licensing sanctions possible.

• Effective July 1, 2011.
