HB 1282 Summary

• Requires state educational institutions to interview at least one qualified minority applicant when hiring a head coach for intercollegiate athletic teams or an athletic director position.

• Defines "minority" to include individuals identified as Black or African-American, Hispanic or Latino, Asian, American Indian, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander.

• Exception applies if the institution is unable to identify a qualified minority applicant willing to interview for the position.

• Provides an affirmative defense for institutions that made good faith efforts to identify a qualified minority applicant but were unsuccessful.

• Effective July 1, 2011.
