HB 1345 Summary

• Elevates the offense of mistreating or interfering with a law enforcement animal from a Class A misdemeanor to a Class D felony for all violations.

• Removes the previous requirement that aggravating circumstances (serious permanent disfigurement, unconsciousness, permanent loss of bodily function, or death) must occur for felony charges to apply.

• Provides a defense for employees or agents of law enforcement agencies who engage in reasonable acts of training, handling, or discipline of law enforcement animals.

• Authorizes courts to order restitution for veterinary bills and replacement costs if the animal is disabled or killed.

• Becomes effective July 1, 2011.
