HB 1409 Summary

• Authorizes community corrections advisory boards to appoint individuals as community corrections police officers who complete pre-basic training courses approved by the law enforcement training board and the appointing advisory board.

• Grants community corrections police officers police powers including arrest, search and seizure, and firearm carrying, but only in four specific circumstances: on community corrections program property, involving persons in community corrections programs, in their presence, or when assisting another law enforcement officer upon request.

• Allows appointing community corrections advisory boards to further limit the exercise of police powers beyond the four statutory restrictions.

• Excludes community corrections police officers from the definition of "law enforcement officer" under IC 5-2-1 for certain training and qualification purposes.

• Effective July 1, 2011.
