Senate Bill 45 Summary

• Requires state employee health benefit plans, accident and sickness insurance policies, and health maintenance organization contracts that cover prescription drugs to also cover smoking cessation drugs (prescription drugs used to assist individuals in quitting tobacco use).

• Smoking cessation drug coverage must not be subject to less favorable dollar limits, deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance provisions than those applying to prescription drugs generally under the same plan or policy.

• Applies to state employee health benefit plans, accident and sickness insurance policies, and HMO contracts that are established, entered into, delivered, amended, or renewed after June 30, 2011.

• Effective date: July 1, 2011.
