Senate Bill 128 Summary

• Requires judges of city and town courts to be attorneys in good standing admitted to practice law in Indiana, effective July 1, 2011.

• Allows current judges serving on June 30, 2011 who are not attorneys to continue serving for the remainder of their existing terms only.

• Increases civil jurisdiction limits for city courts in Lake County, town courts in Lake County, and city courts in second class cities from $3,000 to $6,000 for civil actions and landlord-tenant cases.

• Establishes city courts in second class cities as courts of record.

• Allows candidates for city or town court judgeships in elections scheduled for November 8, 2011 to file candidacy declarations by August 1, 2011 regardless of other filing deadline requirements.
