SB 171 Summary

• Prohibits public schools and accredited nonpublic schools from beginning student instruction before the Tuesday after Labor Day (first Monday in September) or ending after June 10, effective for the 2013-2014 school year.

• Allows governing bodies to establish earlier start dates or later end dates for year-round schools, balanced calendar schools, and schools coordinating with postsecondary institutions through public hearings and majority vote.

• Allows governing bodies to extend the end date past June 10 for any other school through public hearings and majority vote.

• Applies only to collective bargaining agreements and contracts negotiated or renewed after June 30, 2013.

• Becomes effective July 1, 2011.
