SB 211 Summary

• Requires installation of carbon monoxide detectors in residential dwellings, hotels, and motels beginning July 1, 2012, if the dwelling contains a carbon monoxide source or has an attached garage.

• Mandates carbon monoxide detectors be installed within 10 feet of sleeping areas and audible to occupants, or within 25 feet if connected to a centralized alarm system.

• Establishes landlord responsibilities to provide, install, and maintain functional carbon monoxide detectors, with repairs required within 7 working days of notice.

• Establishes tenant responsibilities to maintain detectors, test them every 6 months, and notify landlords of malfunctions.

• Expands carbon monoxide detector requirements to child care facilities, nursing homes, mobile home communities, and facilities registered as child care ministries.

• Adds "hydrocarbon gases" to fire safety law definitions in Indiana Code sections 22-12 and 36-8.

• Effective July 1, 2011.
