Senate Bill No. 319 Summary

• Reduces the criminal penalty for unlawful firearm possession in or on school property, at school functions, or on school buses from a Class D felony to a Class A misdemeanor.

• Creates an exemption for licensed handgun carriers who are not students to store firearms in locked motor vehicles parked on school property if the firearm is locked in the trunk, glove compartment, or out of plain sight.

• Exempts law enforcement officers, school-authorized security personnel, and persons transporting others to school while possessing a firearm from firearm possession restrictions on school property.

• Takes effect July 1, 2011.
