SB 547 Summary

• Changes the state superintendent of public instruction from an elected position to one appointed by the governor, effective July 1, 2011.

• Removes the superintendent from definitions of "public officer," "state office," and positions required to file financial disclosure statements under state ethics laws.

• Removes the superintendent from state convention nominations and statewide election ballots.

• Allows the incumbent superintendent elected in November 2008 to serve through January 14, 2013 under previous salary and ethics rules.

• Establishes the governor as sole appointing authority for various education boards and committees previously requiring joint appointment with the superintendent.
