Indiana Senate recognizes the Sullivan County American Indian Council (SCAIC), Indiana University class, and Reg Petoskey for efforts to protect the Waapaahsiki Siipiiwi Indian Mound in Sullivan County

The mound, named using the Miami Native American word for the Wabash River, sits on private land owned by Indiana Michigan Power Company under a lease agreement developed by SCAIC

Indiana University professor Sonya Atalay developed a service learning class for graduate students to conduct archaeological surveys, create an educational walking trail, record oral histories, and work with local teachers to incorporate Native American history into K-12 curriculum

The site will serve as a location for Native American ceremonies and field trip destination while a comprehensive resource list about Native American history in Indiana will be compiled and made publicly available

Secretary of the Senate directed to transmit copies of the resolution to the Sullivan County American Indian Council and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Director
