HB 1089 Summary

• Department of Education must develop a "farm to school" plan in conjunction with the state board to connect schools with local farms and provide locally produced foods in school breakfast, lunch, and snack programs.

• Plan must promote farm to school programs, identify and address impediments to local food procurement, facilitate communication between farmers and schools, and provide training for food service personnel, farmers, and distributors.

• Plan must include public education campaigns, posting of information on the department's website, nutritional and agricultural education (farm visits, cooking demonstrations, gardening), and analysis of fiscal impacts.

• Components with fiscal impacts must be presented to the General Assembly for consideration and budget appropriation for fiscal years 2013 and 2014; components without fiscal impacts may be implemented after a public hearing by the state board.

• State board shall adopt rules under IC 4-22-2 to implement the chapter; effective date is July 1, 2012.
