HB 1310 Summary

• Establishes the Commission on Improving the Status of Children in Indiana as a 25-member body with members appointed by legislative leaders, the governor, and the chief justice of the supreme court.

• Requires the Department of Education, Department of Correction, Criminal Justice Institute, Division of Mental Health and Addiction, Department of Child Services, Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning, Department of Health, and the Board for Coordination of Programs Serving Vulnerable Individuals to submit annual reports to the commission by June 30 each year.

• Directs the commission to study state agency policies affecting children's well-being, review and rank Indiana's performance on metrics including academic success, poverty, health, school discipline, behavioral health access, child abuse, and infant mortality.

• Authorizes the commission to make legislative recommendations, monitor implementation of laws and programs affecting children, and request information from other state agencies on child-related matters.

• Takes effect July 1, 2012.
