HB 1368 Summary

• Allows military dependents whose spouse, parent, or legal guardian is currently serving on active duty with Indiana designated as their home of record to pay resident tuition rates at Indiana state educational institutions for undergraduate courses.

• Permits Indiana veterans and their military dependents admitted to state educational institutions within 12 months of discharge or release from medical care for service-related injuries to pay resident tuition rates for undergraduate courses.

• Requires military dependents and veterans to physically attend courses in Indiana to qualify for resident tuition rates, regardless of prior Indiana residency establishment.

• Defines "military dependent" according to 37 U.S.C. 401(a)(1) and (a)(2) as of January 1, 2012, and "Indiana veteran" as individuals who designated Indiana as their home of record at enlistment, maintained it throughout service, were legal residents, and received any discharge except dishonorable.

• Allows state educational institutions to request reasonable documentation such as military leave and earnings statements to verify resident status and takes effect July 1, 2012.
