Veteran's discharge records filed with county recorders become public records if the veteran's Social Security number has been redacted

County recorders must redact the Social Security number from discharge records when they receive a written public record request

Unredacted discharge records may only be provided to specific individuals: the veteran themselves, county/city service officers, Indiana Department of Veterans' Affairs employees, licensed funeral directors assisting with the veteran's burial, spouse or next of kin of deceased veterans, or persons with court orders (attorneys in fact, guardians, or personal representatives)

All persons requesting unredacted records must provide photographic identification issued by the United States or Indiana, along with additional documentation depending on their relationship to the veteran
