Senate Bill 129 Summary

• Replaces the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress (ISTEP) program with the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment program developed by the Northwest Evaluation Association, effective July 1, 2012.

• Repeals the definition of "ISTEP program" and substitutes "assessment program" throughout Indiana Code Title 20 to refer to the new MAP-based testing system.

• Authorizes the state superintendent to continue administering ISTEP after June 30, 2012, until suitable MAP assessment programs are fully developed and implemented.

• Makes conforming changes across multiple education statutes (IC 20-18-2, IC 20-19-4-10, IC 20-20, IC 20-24, IC 20-26-15, IC 20-28-8-5, IC 20-30, IC 20-31, IC 20-32, IC 20-33-2-13, IC 20-35-8-1, and IC 20-51-1) to replace ISTEP references with assessment program terminology.

• Maintains all existing assessment functions including testing in English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies; graduation examinations; remediation programs; and public reporting requirements under the new assessment framework.
