Senate Bill 356 Summary

• Employees of counties, cities, towns, or townships are automatically considered resigned when they assume an elected executive office or become an elected member of the unit's legislative or fiscal body.

• Volunteer firefighters are prohibited from holding elected office in the unit that oversees their fire department's budget and operations.

• Employees and volunteer firefighters may hold elected offices in other units and may serve on boards, commissions, or committees of their employing unit.

• Individuals already holding elected office on January 1, 2013, may continue serving in that office and their employment until their term expires.

• Effective date is July 1, 2012.
