Senate Bill 399 Summary

• School corporations must advise students of available vocational training during annual graduation plan reviews and when developing initial graduation plans in grade 9.

• Guidance counselors must inform students of career opportunities that do not require college attendance, including vocational/industrial training and armed forces or national guard service.

• Legislative council shall establish a vocational education study committee to identify current vocational programs, increase student participation, modernize training, reduce costs, and improve transportation for off-campus vocational education.

• Commission on state tax and financing policy must study the feasibility of offering tax incentives to companies that provide vocational or industrial job training to high school students.

• Effective dates: vocational study committee provisions and tax incentive study upon passage; graduation plan advising requirements effective July 1, 2012.
