HB 1118 Summary

• Allows operators of motorcycles, motorized bicycles, motor scooters, and bicycles to proceed through a red traffic signal if they come to a complete stop for at least 120 seconds at the intersection.

• Requires operators to exercise due caution, treat the signal as a stop sign, and determine that it is safe to proceed before entering the intersection on red.

• Amends Indiana Code 9-21-3-7 to add this red light proceeding provision as an exception to the standard requirement that vehicles must stop at red signals.

• Makes conforming amendments to motorcycle and motorized vehicle traffic regulations to ensure the new red light provision applies consistently across all specified vehicle types.

• Effective July 1, 2013.
