HB 1229 Summary

• Allows high school students from nonpublic schools (accredited or nonaccredited) that are not members of an athletic association to participate in athletics at public high schools within their legal settlement, effective July 1, 2013.

• Students from accredited nonpublic schools must fulfill the same academic requirements as public school students and meet all athletic standards including tryouts, codes of conduct, physical exams, and transfer rules.

• Students from nonaccredited nonpublic schools must either meet accredited school requirements or attend a nonaccredited school for the previous three school years and pass nationally recognized achievement tests with minimum grade-level scores.

• Nonaccredited nonpublic school students who provide false information or documentation to meet eligibility requirements become ineligible to participate in athletics and may face association penalties.

• Public or accredited nonpublic schools that knowingly allow participation by nonaccredited school students with false qualifications are subject to penalties established by the athletic association.
