HB 1340 Summary

• Requires school principals to inform students and parents transferring to nonaccredited nonpublic schools of legal requirements; both principal and parent must sign an acknowledgment form or student is marked as dropout and reported to bureau of motor vehicles for driver's license revocation.

• Mandates school counselors meet with students, parents, and teachers to discuss remediation options when students fail to achieve passing scores on graduation examinations.

• Requires secondary schools to include provisions in their improvement plans to reduce the number of graduation exam waivers granted to graduates.

• Changes graduation waiver eligibility requirements to include completion of industry certification or workforce credential, or acceptance at approved postsecondary institutions offering higher education awards or freedom of choice grants.

• Requires teacher recommendations for graduation waivers to be aligned with school corporation policy and supported by classroom work or alternative assessments; repeals outdated graduation standards provisions effective before July 1, 2010.
